Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers by Anne LaMott

I am an Anne LaMott fan. Her (largely autobiographical) books are always meaty and honest.  I read Bird by Bird:  Some Instructions on Writing and Life, many years ago expecting another gushy treatise on letting creativity flow.  Not so.  Anne LaMott is funny.  Witty, even.  And oh, so honest.  Then I read Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith,  and I decided that LaMott’s self-deprecating humor is simply well-deserved wisdom.  I want her to come over for coffee, mostly because I think we’re both slightly neurotic.

Publisher’s Weekly described Help, Thanks, Wow, Anne Lamott’s fourteenth book, as ” a prayer manual for people who wouldn’t be caught dead reading prayer manuals.”  This tiny book (you can read it in one sitting) condenses prayer to the basics: pleas for help, gratitude for what is, and expressions of wonder.  Her unique combination of irreverent reluctant believer, zen-like enlightened one and church lady works for me.  Let me know what you think.

  1. I, too, am an Anne LaMott fan. Every one of her books is inspirational without being preachy. I gave Help, Thanks, Wow to a friend to read while recovering from surgery and she told me it was the best gift she’d received in years.
