The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber

The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber

A richly realized novel set in Victorian times.  You follow the prostitute Sugar as she tries to rise above her circumstances through her association with Mr. William Rackham, the rich perfumier who takes an interest in her as his mistress.  As you journey through this book, you will meet a cast of other characters like Henry Rackham, William’s pious brother, the widow Mrs. Fox, whom Henry adores, Agnes Rackham, William’s “mad” wife, and Sophie, William and Agnes’s neglected daughter.  Faber pulls no punches describing the situations in which many of the characters find themselves.  You can’t help but feel like a voyeur as you watch the events unfold on the pages.  Briskly paced, you don’t feel like you’re reading and 835 page book.  One of the better reads I’ve experienced in quite some time.  Highly recommended!   -By Kristine
