Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin is the first in a series of four mysteries set in Medieval England and Europe. The entire series is a blend of mystery, history, political intrigue, and a little romance. Our heroine is Adelia Aguilar, a woman trained as a doctor, who has been hired by King Henry II to find out who is murdering children in Cambridge. A female doctor would have been an oddity anywhere but especially in England and she is repeatedly thwarted in her investigation by accusations of witchcraft. The story is full of colorful characters and potential villains with a wonderfully atmospheric depiction of life in a Medieval English town. This story is not a cozy mystery, the violence is brutal and graphic. The suspense builds slowly at first as the characters and setting are introduced but then it takes off and you won’t be able to put it down. I’ll be impressed if you can guess the murderer before the end. We own this in print and as an e-book.
