Family Connection Library is a collaboration of multiple agencies and programs working together to promote early learning and healthy development in young children, by making early childhood support and family stability resources readily available for families and caregivers at the Cedar Rapids Public Library.
To date, thirteen public and private agencies have signed an agreement to dedicate time, staff and services for young children and families at the library. Services offered over the next year through the Family Connection Library will include classes for early care teachers/child care providers, parenting resources, activities for children, developmental screenings and a teacher work space.
The Family Connections Library grew out of Priority #4 of the 15-In-Five initiative, begun in 2005. A lengthy community planning process resulted in the development of this “early childhood hub” within the new library for young children, parents and caregivers.
Smart Start for Young Children Activities
There are many fun ways to help prepare your child for school success. The Family Connections Library recently hosted an event titled “Smart Start for Young Children” at the Cedar Rapids Public Library. The activities were enjoyed by many families at the event and can easily be done at home, as well. These playful activities will introduce or reinforce skills that can help your child succeed in school. Try them with your child and remember “play, more than other activity, fuels healthy development of young children.”
